WATER TEMPERATURE AND CLARITY:
Off-color that fluctuates daily in the lower river. 3 feet of visibility from tundra bank up.
WEATHER CONDITIONS:
Highs in the low 50s with broken skies and periods of sunshine. Mostly dry.
HOT FLY OF THE WEEK:
Spin glows on the gear rods and large intruder style flies.
HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK:
The highlight of this week was having lots of different fishing options. Early season can be one dimensional if the water is high. This year it’s been great to have productive Trout and Grayling fishing so early as well as an impressive Chum run.
COMMENTS FOR THE WEEK:
After a smooth setup, we’re excited to get the ball rolling for another season on the Kanektok River.
The river is in excellent shape right now. Water levels are lower and clearer than we’ve seen this early in the season in several years, making for outstanding fishing conditions.
During setup, it seemed like the king salmon were running a little late, but everything changed once our guests arrived. The fishing improved dramatically, and we enjoyed a fantastic opening week. Big kings were landed every day on both conventional gear and flies.
Chum salmon have also been pouring into the river and can now be found along most of the soft inside seams.
The trout fishing is off to a strong start as well, thanks to the clear water. As always, mouse patterns have been our fly of choice this time of year. Floating the upper river in the evenings, searching for surface-happy trout, has been the perfect way to wrap up the day after chasing kings in the lower river.
