The Hyatte Family and guide Sam Ellinger with a big King caught off the gravel bar in front of camp.

WATER TEMPERATURE AND CLARITY:

Low 50s. Clarity is improving but the water still has a little color in it.

WEATHER CONDITIONS:

Overcast skies with rain showers.

HOT FLY OF THE WEEK:

Pink jigs and flies for the chums and humpies. Beads for the dollies, and mice for the trout.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK:

This week we had two twelve-year-old twin girls in our camp that were new to fishing. On the first day, a couple of the guides thought it would be a good idea to have them start fishing right out in front of camp twitching jigs on their spinning rods. One of the first fish they hooked was a big king salmon! After a ten-minute fight the guides tailed the fish with about half the camp out watching the commotion. Needless to say, the girls picked up on the fishing fast and no fish was safe after that.

 QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

The Duncan’s provide outstanding hospitality and guiding on a river that is one of a kind.

There is truly nowhere else like the Kanektok. Jerry Costello, WA

WILDLIFE SPOTTED:

One brown bear

COMMENTS FOR THE WEEK:

The end of July is never quite the same from season to season on the Kanektok. This year the water has remained relatively high leading to awesome salmon fishing and tougher trout fishing. The Chums and Sockeye are still pouring in to the river and can be found just about anywhere. The Humpies, as always, are very aggressive and willing to take anything pink. The Silvers have shown up early, and we are beginning to catch them in slews all the way upriver closer to camp. Kings season ended on a high note! Tons of big 20-30lb plus fish were caught, including some chrome fish, in the final days of the season. Despite the highwater the trout and Dollie fishing is starting to pick up. The water temperature has come up and guests that devoted time towards Rainbow fishing were rewarded with some awesome mouse eats. With the Salmon beginning to dig beds, and another fabulous week behind us, we are excited to see what August has in store!
