LOWER BASE CAMP FISHING REPORT WEEK OF AUGUST 3rd to 10th, 2019

WATER TEMPERATURE AND CLARITY:
52-57℉ the water clarity at the beginning of the week had a touch of color with the rains that abated quickly.

WEATHER CONDITIONS:
The weather this week was cloudy and rainy for the most part, with some sunshine at the end of the week.

HOT FLY OF THE WEEK:

Dillon’s Silver Fly, pink and silver

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK:
Two of our guests this week were brand new to fly fishing when they arrived in Quinhagak. Over the course of the week, these two honed their skills and were roping fish like no one could believe. It’s amazing what a week in “the classroom” can do.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
“Fishing with the Duncan’s is the epitome of fun! We’re heading to Kodiak next and maybe Christmas Island in January. They need more camps!!”
– Brad Holms

WILDLIFE SPOTTED:
Still seeing a few Bears on the river. Highlight was a big Bull Moose ran right into camp one night. As always, we are seeing lots of birds: Mallards, Teal, Pintails, Widgeon, Harlequins and Geese. We are also seeing all the shore birds along with lots of Eagles, Goshawks, Falcons, Ospreys and Tundra Swans.

COMMENTS FOR THE WEEK:
Fishing is really starting to feel like August! Chums, Pinks, Sockeyes and Kings are all churning up the river bottom in reproductive exultation, and every other fish in the river seems to be picking up adjacent real estate. Silvers being the one notable exception, they’re filing in thicker and thicker every day, and we’re getting the first top water eats of the season. The coming weeks promise more color on the dollies, and more silvers in the sloughs, watch out.

On a more somber note, the legendary Albert Hunter clocked in the final day of his 22-year career with the Duncan’s this week. Few have guided longer for the brand and none will be missed more. Good thing we know where to find him.
