Kanektok River Fishing Reports 2014

Daryl Bradford and guide Robbie Wirth with a big 26” Lower River Rainbow

These are the Current 2014 fishing reports

For the archived fishing reports see 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 currrent fishing reports

Weather:

Though the summer months are Alaska's most temperate, the weather is still volatile and moody. A balmy sun-filled day can change quickly as the wind blows in the clouds and rain. Proper clothing can ensure everyone's comfort and enjoyment. Dress in layers and always bring a raincoat.

7 day weather forecast for Quinhagak,

LOWER BASE CAMP FISHING REPORT
FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 16th to 23rd, 2014

WATER TEMPERATURE AND CLARITY:
The river came up 8 inches and colored up through mid week due to all the rain. The water temperature this week was from 53 to 57 degrees. By mid week the river cleared up and the water started dropping fast.

WEATHER CONDITIONS:
Sunday was rainy most of the day. Monday and Tuesday the weather was pretty nice with little to no rain. Wednesday thru Saturday we had some really nice sunny weather with a few rain showers rolling through.

HOT FLY OF THE WEEK:
Hard to beat the bead or Egg Pattern

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK:
Again, we were catching some very large colored up Dollies.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
Second trip was as good as or better than the first. I’m looking forward to the third. The Duncan’s & Staff are absolutely first rate… and really nice guys. Ken Osterman, New Jersey.

WILDLIFE SPOTTED:
Just saw the one Bear this week across from camp. As always we are seeing lots of birds: Mallards, Teal, Pintails, Widgeon, Harlequins and Geese. We are also seeing all the shore birds along with lots of Eagles, Goshawks, Falcons, Ospreys, Tundra Swans and Great Horned Owls.

COMMENTS FOR THE WEEK:
We are still catching lots of colored up Dollies. With the rains this week we had a great push of fresh chrome Silver’s come in and the fishing was much better. The Rainbow fishing was not bad considering the rising water and color.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK:

Taylor Wilson with a huge colored up Dollie.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK:
Again, we had a mixed group that all had a great time together.

REPORTING FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 26 TO AUGUST 2

WATER TEMP AND CLARITY
We had a high water temp of 60 degrees this week!! Swimming weather!! The river is Gin clear!

WEATHER CONDITIONS
The weather was absolutely perfect this week until friday. We had sunshine and just enough wind out of the north to keep the bugs down all week. On Friday it rained for most of the day and the wind switched to coming out of the Southeast... Southeast wind usually means bad weather.

HOT FLY OF THE WEEK
The incredible edible egg was hard to beat this week. Beads are also working well.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK
Every year we have a group of Wounded Warriors stop by our camp to warm up and have some coffee. These guys were first class guys and true heroes. It was an honor to share a cup of coffee and talk with them for a few minutes. While they were in the upper river one of the guides from the wounded warrior program was teasing them about ordering up some pizza. On cue up the river comes a Black hawk helicopter. The helicopter lands and some military guys come running out with boxes of pizza!! Now that is awesome!!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

The best Rainbow trout fishing in the world. John Wright, LA

The Rainbows are moving off the banks and into the spawning Salmon. The Dollie fishing is great this year and they are coming in strong and stacked up thick on all the bars. HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK
Everyone caught a ton of fish this week but the highlight was all of the bear sightings. It was not uncommon for each group of two anglers to see several different bear each day.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Truly a first class experience. It will completely spoil you for any other fishing experience. Steve Sachs Dublin, OH

WILDLIFE SPOTTED
We had lots of bear sightings this week. COMMENTS FOR THE WEEK

An incredible number of bear sightings this week. We have a small Chum run this year so the rainbows and Dollies are not focused on the spawning salmon like they normally would be at this time of year. It has made the mousing and dry fly fishing fantastic!

PHOTO OF THE WEEK

COMMENTS FOR THE WEEK

The Sockeye run this year is as big as I can remember. The Chum run seems to be down and there are more Kings than the past few years but it is still down from what it should be. We are not fishing for Kings or Chums at all. The Kings and Chums are pairing up and are starting to spawn now. Next week we will be fishing more around the spawning salmon for Rainbows and Dollies.

LOWER BASE CAMP FISHING REPORT
FOR WEEK OF JULY 12th TO 19th, 2014

WATER TEMPERATURE AND CLARITY:
By Saturday morning the river came up 5 to 6 inches and colored up. By Sunday morning it had already cleared up with good visibility. The river temperature this week varied from 52 to 56 degrees.

WEATHER CONDITIONS:
The weather this week has been great! Sunday through Thursday the weather was sunny and hot with the exception of a short rain storm that rolled through one day and Friday it rained pretty much all day.

HOT FLY OF THE WEEK:
Dollie Llamas are on fire for everything.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK:
The Rainbow fishing is out of control!!!!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
I guided for the Duncan’s for five years on the Chosen and thought I’d seen it all. It’s seventeen years later and this Rainbow fishery is better than ever! Eric Vukovich, CA

WILDLIFE SPOTTED:
Saw quite a few Bears on the river this week and two Moose on the beach and two different Moose in the river.

We had another great week of angling! The Sockeye’s are still rolling in heavy and the Pinks are starting to show in good numbers. ADFG has finally made the decision to keep Kings closed all season. With that said we are seeing lots of Kings stacked up in all the usual holes and it looks like we had a great escapement since the commercial fishing was closed also. We are still seeing lots of Dollies and some very big fish. The Rainbow fishing this week is the best it has been all season. Throwing flesh flies and Dollie Llamas against the bank is just out of control.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK:

UPPER BASE CAMP FISHING REPORT
REPORTING FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 5 TO JULY 12

WATER TEMP AND CLARITY
We started his week off with water temps as high as 58 degrees!!! The weather changed and now the temps have been from 50 to 53 degrees. The river came up about five inches but it is crystal clear.

WEATHER CONDITIONS
On most days this week it has been cold and wet. It didn’t rain all day but we had showers off and on every day.

HOT FLY OF THE WEEK
The mouse is still working very well although the Dali Llama patterns were our best producers!

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK
The highlight for me was having my long time friends and guests Larry and Rankin Mcdaniels back in camp. They have been fishing with us since 1982! We also saw a very small bear cub that had been separated from its mother. It was on the other side of the river from camp and bawling its head off. Just when we thought maybe mom had been killed or run off by another bear here she came swimming up river. She put her baby on here back and swam down river and as she climbed out she reached
back and flipped him off her back. It was a relief to see them together. We don’t know for sure how they got separated but she may have been running off another bear.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

A fishing trip of a lifetime in wild Alaska!! Dan Swift, Woodlands ,TX

WILDLIFE SPOTTED
We had lots of bear sightings this week. Lots of birds along the river including Bald Eagles, Mallards, Pintail, Wigeon, Green wing Teal, Canadian Geese, Tundra Swans, Mergansers, Common Loons, Sandhill Cranes, Arctic Terns, Long tail Jaegers, Glaucous winged Gulls, Bald Eagles, Ruffed Legged Hawks, Kestrels, Harlequin ducks, Osprey, Peregrine falcons, Golden crowned Sparrows, Swallows, Common snipe, Greater yellow leg, Ptarmigan, Ravens, and Crows.

LOWER BASE CAMP FISHING REPORT
FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 5 TO 12

WATER TEMPERATURE AND CLARITY:
The river is in great shape and has really good visibility. Mid week it came up around four inches but it is still in great shape. The river temperature was from 52 degrees to 54 degrees.

WEATHER CONDITIONS:
We pretty much had it all this week as far as weather. We had rain, sun and wind every day, if you didn’t like the weather wait half an hour and it would change.

HOT FLY OF THE WEEK:
Black/White or Olive/White Dollie Llama and the pink Teeny Nymph for the salmon.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK:
We had a great group of guests and everyone had a great time!!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
After missing 2 years it was the best feeling to be back with my friends the Duncan’s. God Bless the Kanektok!

WILDLIFE SPOTTED:
We saw Bears and a Moose crossing the river this week. Lots of Bear and Moose tracks on most of the gravels. As always we are seeing lots of birds: Mallards, Teal, Pintails, Widgeon, Harlequins and Geese. We are also seeing all the shore birds along with lots of Eagles, Goshawks, Falcons, Ospreys and Tundra Swans.

COMMENTS FOR THE WEEK:
The King fishing is still closed and the last word we got was it was going to PROBABLY be open on July 12th or 13th. The fishing for Chums is still good but with the low, warm water they were a little picky for the first part of the week. The Sockeye are marching in like crazy, ADFG says we have 3000 to 4000 going over the weir every day. The Rainbow and Dollie fishing is still on fire! Super fun week with some great guests. Even with the King fishing being closed everyone kept a great attitude, fished for all the other species and we all had a great week of angling and good times.

COMMENTS FOR THE WEEK

We had a great group of fisherman this week and everyone caught a lot of nice trout. The salmon are really coming in strong.
We have more Kings, Chums and Sockeye in the Upper River than we have had in years for this time of year!

LOWER BASE CAMP FISHING REPORT
FOR WEEK OF JUNE 28-JULY 5, 2014

WATER TEMPERATURE AND CLARITY:
The water temperature has been very warm for this time of year, anywhere from 48 degrees in the morning to 57 degrees in the evenings. The water clarity is great. The river is dropping like crazy!

WEATHER CONDITIONS:
Every day was super sunny and hot with just one cold wet day all week.

HOT FLY OF THE WEEK:
Mice, Dollie Llamas and Sculpins are working great for the Bows! Any fly you tie on is working for the Salmon as long as it is Pink!

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK:
With King fishing closed we all still had a great week of angling and good times. There’s a lot of fish in the river to be caught.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
I have been with many Alaska guides over a 30 year period. Duncan & Sons are head and shoulders above them all. Bob LaDu, Portland, OR

WILDLIFE SPOTTED:
As always we are seeing lots of birds: Mallards, Teal, Pintails, Widgeon, Harlequins and Geese. We are also seeing all the shore birds along with lots of Eagles, Goshawks, Falcons, Ospreys, Tundra Swans and Great Horned Owls.

COMMENTS FOR THE WEEK:
The King fishing was closed all week but it sounds like they will be opening it up around July 8th or 10th. We are seeing lots of Kings in the river but it is hard to know how many we are getting when we cannot fish for them and the weir is 50 miles upriver. The Chums, Sockeyes and Pinks are marching in like crazy. We have been seeing and catching lots of big Dollies already. The Rainbow fishing is on fire!
